About

We envision a world where law successfully promotes public health, well-being, and equity.

Based at the Temple University Beasley School of Law, the Center for Public Health Law Research promotes public health, well-being, and equity by developing and advancing tools, resources, and methods to support evidence-based policymaking. We believe that law is a powerful tool that can advance public health and well-being, but also recognize the historical and contemporary harms that law can have. By developing and promoting the measurement and evaluation of the law’s impact, we strive to support proactive and creative policies that advance public health and well-being for all.

Our organizational values are the guiding principles to our work. We aim to prioritize these values in all aspects of our work, including our work product, external partnerships, and internal organizational practices:

  • Collaboration and Community: As a transdisciplinary field, we are at our best and most effective when we reach beyond our institution to build a broad, diverse network of partners and collaborators.
  • Health Equity: We believe that everyone should have a fair and just opportunity to be as healthy as possible. Achieving health equity requires eliminating disparities in health and healthcare by addressing social determinants of health and dismantling structural barriers.
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: We are committed to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion across all aspects of our work, and we seek to create an organizational environment where all people feel valued, supported, trusted, and respected. We believe our work is stronger and more effective when we draw on the skills and expertise of people with varying lived experiences, social identities, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ethics, Integrity, and Evidence-Based Decision-Making: Our work is transparent, trustworthy, and created with the utmost care for the public good. We strive to use evidence-based decision-making approaches within our methods. Data, research, and evidence – and the democratization of those tools and resources – are essential to high quality and equitable decision-making and fostering accountability in policymaking.
  • Innovation and Access: We embrace creative, innovative thinking and problem-solving, encourage growth and development, and constantly seek to improve upon old ways of doing things. We aim to create and disseminate legal data and research that is accessible, usable, and useful to a wide range of partners and stakeholders.

The Center celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2019.
